Artemis II, the first crewed mission to the Moon since 1972, is safely on its way back to Earth after a flawless test flight around our nearest neighbor. In the process, the crew has surpassed the record for the farthest human spaceflight, a record that had stood since Apollo 13 in 1970.
This is more than a historic milestone. It marks the beginning of a bold new chapter in humanity’s journey beyond Earth.
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman recently announced that the Artemis program is being expanded. NASA has also announced plans to construct a lunar surface base. This ambitious step is exactly what is necessary to establish a lasting human presence on the Moon and, eventually, deeper into the solar system.
What makes this moment truly revolutionary is NASA’s deliberate shift away from purely taxpayer-funded missions toward an economically self-sustaining model. And the private sector is leading the charge.
Companies like SpaceX have already slashed the cost of getting payloads into space, making launches cheaper, more frequent, and far more reliable than ever before. Through close collaboration with NASA, private innovation is turning what once seemed like distant dreams into practical, scalable reality.

But the real game-changer goes even further. Pure commercial applications are exploding and will form the backbone of a thriving, self-sustaining space economy. SpaceX’s Starlink constellation is already beaming high-speed internet to millions of people in remote and underserved areas across the globe. This is a fully private service generating its own revenue, made possible by SpaceX’s innovations in reusable rocketry.
Looking ahead, orbital data centres powered by abundant solar energy (free from Earth’s grid limits and cooling challenges) are on the horizon to support the exploding demands of AI and cloud computing. Add in orbital manufacturing, space tourism, and eventual asteroid resource extraction, and the picture becomes clear: space is no longer just a government project. It’s becoming a genuine commercial frontier where private enterprise can profit, innovate, and grow independently.
These partnerships are not just about cutting costs for NASA. It’s about creating an entire space economy where private companies, working alongside NASA’s expertise and vision, drive sustainable progress. The days of space exploration being the exclusive domain of governments are ending. A new era is here, and the sky is the limit.
Australia could benefit enormously from this revolution in commercial space. Our strategic geographic location near the equator gives us a powerful natural advantage for rocket launches, allowing heavier payloads to reach orbit with less fuel thanks to Earth’s rotational boost. Combined with our political stability, robust economy, world-class infrastructure, and vast open territories ideal for large-scale spaceports, Australia is perfectly positioned to become a key hub in the new space economy.
With forward-thinking policies, we could attract billions in private investment, create thousands of high-skill jobs, and secure a prosperous stake in everything from satellite constellations and space-based internet to orbital manufacturing and future resource extraction. This is a tremendous opportunity for our country.

To round out this piece, here is an unscripted message from Artemis II astronaut Victor Glover , delivered during the mission while gazing back at Earth:
“You know, I don’t have anything prepared. I am glad you brought that up, though. I think these observances are important and as we are so far from Earth and looking back at, you know, the beauty of creation, I think for me, one of the really important personal perspectives that I have up here is I can really see Earth as one thing.
And you know, when I read the Bible and I look at all of the amazing things that were done for us who were created, it’s — you have this amazing place, this spaceship. You guys are talking to us because we’re in a spaceship really far from Earth, but you’re on a spaceship called Earth that was created to give us a place to live in the universe, in the cosmos. Maybe the distance we are from you makes you think what we’re doing is special, but we’re the same distance from you. And I’m trying to tell you — just trust me — you are special.
In all of this emptiness — this is a whole bunch of nothing, this thing we call the universe — you have this oasis, this beautiful place that we get to exist together
I think as we go into Easter Sunday thinking about, you know, all the cultures all around the world, whether you celebrate it or not, whether you believe in God or not, this is an opportunity for us to remember where we are, who we are, and that we are the same thing and that we’ve got to get through this together.”
