Privacy policy

Backbone Australia is operated by Mannwest. This policy explains how information is handled when you visit the website, subscribe, vote or submit a story.

Newsletter signups include your first name and email address. Story submissions may include your name or initials, region, story type, headline, story and an optional contact email. Completing the Courage Scorecard saves your score and result category without your name, email or individual answers. If you choose to share your result with the team, we also receive your email and assessment responses. Correspondence may contain any other information you choose to send. Do not submit confidential information or personal information about other people without appropriate permission.

We use this information to deliver requested updates, manage subscriptions, assess and moderate stories, contact contributors, send requested results and respond to enquiries. Form submissions are stored before email notifications or newsletter synchronisation so a provider failure does not lose your request. Quiz completion records help the team understand participation. Quiz contact requests do not create newsletter subscriptions. Providing optional details is your choice; some features need the information marked as required.

Stories are reviewed before publication. If approved, the story, supplied name or initials, region and story type may become public and appear in search engines or shared links. Your contact email is not included in the public story feed. You can ask us to correct or remove a story, although we cannot remove copies independently saved or shared by others.

Essential storage remembers your privacy choices, supports administrator security and helps prevent repeat poll votes. The privacy-choice cookie lasts up to six months, the poll cookie up to one year, and administrator sessions up to 12 hours. Your theme choice and scorecard result may be saved in browser local storage until you clear them. The completed score and result category are also saved on our server, as explained before you start. Individual answers are sent only if you choose to share your result with the team.

Optional website analytics remain off unless you accept them. When enabled, they record page and action events, timestamps, page titles and a rotating hashed visitor identifier derived from network/browser information. This identifier is not your name or email, but is not treated as completely anonymous. Embedded services such as YouTube, Vimeo and Spotify remain blocked until you allow external media. Once loaded, those providers receive connection information and may use their own cookies. Cookie settings in the footer let you change your choices at any time. Necessary server/security logs and records needed to fulfil your requests are separate from optional analytics.

The website uses Replit for hosting and database services, Resend for transactional email and Mailchimp for newsletters. Authorised administrators and relevant providers can access information needed for their work. Providers may process information outside Australia, including in the United States. Their current privacy notices explain their own services and locations. Contact us for questions about a specific disclosure. Information may also be disclosed where required or authorised by law.

We use access controls and encrypted website connections to protect information. Records are retained for the purposes described here, including operating subscriptions, moderation, security and dealing with enquiries or disputes. Retention depends on the record and applicable obligations; browser cookie expiry does not delete server records or backups. Contact us to request deletion or discuss a particular record. We cannot promise that every record or backup can be removed immediately.

Use the unsubscribe link in a newsletter to stop those messages, or contact us for help. You can request access to or correction of personal information, ask about deletion, or make a privacy complaint by emailing mannwest@mannkal.org. Please describe your request without sending unnecessary sensitive information. We may ask for information needed to verify your identity. We will explain the response and any relevant limits. If your concern is not resolved, you can contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au.
